April 26, 2003 -- A Brooklyn rabbi and his daughter pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges they tried to pay thousands of dollars to have bribe Judge Gerald Garson fix the woman's bitter child custody case. Ezra Zifrani, 66, and daughter Esther Weitzner, 36, who were freed on $5,000 bail from Criminal Court, face conspiracy charges that could mean a year in jail.

The pair were the seventh and eighth people charged in the Brooklyn divorce-court bribery scandal, in which Garson and members of his court allegedly accepted gifts to fix divorce and child-custody cases.

Court sources said the pair allegedly gave the "green light" for the scheme's alleged go-between and bag man, electronics store owner Nissim Elmann, to give Garson $5,000 to fix the case for the mother of five.

Yesterday, the woman's lawyer denied the charges.

"She's innocent," said attorney Patrick Joyce. "Whatever other people did, she is unaware of."

However, law enforcement sources told The Post Weitzner is heard on tape discussing the size of the payoff, asking: "Do we have to bribe the judge with more money?"

In a strange twist, Zifrani's lawyer complained the elderly Orthodox rabbi was unable to eat while in jail overnight because of his religious dietary restrictions. Police, however, said they did Zifrani the courtesy of waiting until after dark Thursday before arresting him so the holy man could finish Passover observances.
